“Fetam Klego” Sinapulan Underground River

Tisoy Traveler

Goes to…

                 Columbio, Sultan Kudarat

Fetam Klego is a hidden gem nestled in Sitio Asmakul Basag, Brgy. Sinapulan, Columbio, Province of Sultan Kudarat right at the boundary of Brgy. Colonsabak, Matanao, Province of Davao del Sur. The term “fetam klego” came from the B’laan word means “underground river”, serves us one of the tourist spot in Columbio and same with the municipality of Matanao. Both sides of either barangays are mainly composed of native B’laan tribe where the rich culture and dialect are preserved.

The trek to the underground river is very picturesque, where you’ll be amazed by beautiful views and landscapes, stunning hills and mountains, fresh air and clean water that soothes your skin, embrace one true color of nature, and experience the thrill of fun while hiking. The said event is perfect for those who seek an adrenalin dose and nature lovers looking for a spot to dig and dip and divert the hustle and bustle in the city.

How to get there:

  1. From Manila, there are daily flights directly to Davao City which is the entry point to Matanao, Davao del Sur.
  2. At the airport, you can ride a taxi off to Ecoland Bus Terminal. Or bus (easiest way) right in front of the airport, most likely bus that is passing/going to city proper will stop at Ecoland bus station.
  3. From there, take a signed bus “Bansalan” “Kidapawan” and even “Cotabato” those routes are passing in the town of Matanao. Van is available outside of the terminal or in front of SM, same sign if you will take a van going there. The fare is Php100/head oneway and took to 1hr and half or 2hrs to get there.
  4. Tell the driver to drop you down at Km. 71. From there, motorcycle/tricycle are available off to the town proper of Matanao. The fare is Php20/head and took only minutes to reach the town.
  5. From the town motorcycle, “habal-habal” are available or if you are lucky enough to catch a jeepney either from km. 71 or from the town heading to Brgy. Bangkal much better (fewer expenses).
  6. Then from Brgy. Bangkal motorcycle is available to rent and your haggling abilities are needed in dealing “habal-habal” drivers.

Note: This is the easiest way to get there since it is situated right at the boundary of both province of Davao del Sur and Sultan Kudarat. Better to book a guide/driver first from Matanao or bring your vehicle with you and ask a guide at the tourism office in Matanao because transportation is a bit lacking in these part of Matanao.  As I always said, “ask the locals”.

Where to stay:

If you guys planning to stay a night there, I’m sorry to tell you but there’s no available accommodation in the area and even in the town proper of Matanao. I guess, better to have a contact person in Matanao if you want to stay a night before and plan to trek early morning in the said spot.

Where to eat:

I highly advise to bring your own food or buy some, either in the town proper of Matanao or Brgy. Bangkal, small restaurants/canteen “carenderia” are available, because of theres no available food stall in the area or along the way going there.

Things to do:

  1. Trekking/Hiking
  2. Picture Taking (views and scenery)
  3. Fetam Klego (underground river)
  4. Seven Falls
  5. Swimming
  6. Caving
  7. Roaming around (embracing locals)
  8. Side Trips (famous bibingka by MERS, hopia by JOPOYS both in Digos City, Federico’s Resort and Bugak Spring also in Matanao)

When to go:

  • Weekdays or lean days (to avoid the influx of tourist)
  • Summer (for its cold water)
  • Araw ng Davao del Sur (21st of June onwards)
  • Matanao Fiesta (24th of September)

Travel Notes:

  1. Search the area first before going there. (safety and security first, availability of transportation, accommodation, foods and etc.)
  2. Create your itinerary for the sequence of your travel. (where first, stop for your meal, activities in the area, the time you’ll be spending in that area, the most important is where to stay and etc.)
  3. Budget or Money. (the cost or expenses of your travel.)
  4. What to bring. (camera, phone, power bank, charger, necessities or travel kit, your medicine, tent if you are camping in the beach/island, and more important to bring.)
  5. If you travel in a group better to seek a rented van or what depends on you so that you can go with your itinerary directly and less budget of course.
  6. If you’re a solo traveler, you own your time so better to have a map or guidelines and extra money of course.

(Solo or Group has its own advantages and disadvantages when it comes to travel.)

  1. Take note for the travel time and how long you will be staying in that particular area.
  2. You have to consider the events (summer, the influx of tourist and the most important is the weather).
  3. Also, preparation (when, where and what to do) so that everything will be okay.
  4. Lastly, be a responsible tourist and a traveler.
